Sydney, Jan 18 (NationPress) Authorities in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, reported on Sunday that a man suffered serious injuries after being shot during a public shooting incident in western Sydney late Saturday night.
Emergency services responded to an address in Lalor Park, a Sydney suburb, around 11:35 PM local time following alerts about the shooting, as reported by Xinhua News Agency.
Upon arrival, officers discovered that unknown assailants had discharged multiple rounds into a residence, injuring one occupant before fleeing the scene in a vehicle.
The victim, a 46-year-old male, received medical attention from NSW Ambulance paramedics for his gunshot wound and was subsequently transported to the hospital in stable condition.
Earlier on January 8, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced a royal commission focused on antisemitism and social cohesion in Australia subsequent to a terror attack at Bondi Beach.
During a press conference in Canberra, Albanese revealed that the commission, the highest form of inquiry in Australia, will be under the guidance of former High Court justice Virginia Bell and is expected to submit a report by mid-December.
He stated, "I have taken time to reflect, engaging with leaders of the Jewish community and, most importantly, meeting with the families of victims and survivors from that tragic attack."
The prime minister emphasized that the inquiry aims to assess the extent and nature of antisemitism within Australia, propose measures for law enforcement to address this issue, investigate the circumstances surrounding the Bondi Beach incident, and suggest ways to enhance social cohesion.
"Our government is dedicated to fostering unity and social cohesion, which is essential for Australia to heal, learn, and unite in a spirit of national solidarity," he added.
The alleged sole remaining gunman, identified as 24-year-old Naveed Akram, faces 59 charges, including 15 counts of murder, tied to the attack believed to be influenced by Islamic State ideology.
In December, the New South Wales parliament enacted stringent new laws regarding firearms and protests in response to the deadly mass shooting at Bondi Beach, as reported by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).
The legislation, which combined gun reforms with a temporary ban on protests lasting up to three months, passed with a vote of 18 to 8 shortly before 3 AM local time on December 24 and included a crucial amendment tightening firearms regulations for individuals suspected of having terrorist connections.
This law will return to the lower house for final approval.
The mass shooting, which took place during an event marking the first day of Hanukkah, resulted in 15 fatalities on December 14.
