Singapore, Jan 22 (NationPress) The nation has initiated a committee tasked with reviewing its electoral boundaries as part of the preparations for the upcoming general election, which is slated for November 2025, although the specific date remains undetermined.
On Wednesday, the Elections Department announced that Prime Minister Lawrence Wong convened the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee.
As reported by The Straits Times, the interval between the committee's formation and polling day in the last four elections has varied from four to eleven months, according to Xinhua.
This committee plays a vital role prior to the general election, as it will evaluate current electoral divisions and propose modifications to constituency boundaries, reflecting the most recent voter registrations, the statement indicated.
The committee will consider significant variations in the elector count, taking into account elements such as population changes and new housing projects.
Additionally, on Wednesday, the Elections Department revealed that Wong has directed the Registration Officer to update the voter registers, with the revision expected to be finished by April 1, 2025. The updated registers will be accessible for public review in February 2025.
In May 2024, Wong took over from Lee Hsien Loong as Prime Minister, following Lee's two-decade leadership. Wong is set to guide the ruling People's Action Party into the forthcoming general election.
Last month, Wong was officially designated as the Secretary-General of the ruling PAP, when the party announced its 38th central executive committee appointments.
Wong, who will lead the PAP into the next general election, succeeded senior minister Lee Hsien Loong.
Wong emphasized that he would lead the PAP in striving for every vote to secure the mandate to govern.
The PAP has been the governing party of Singapore since the country gained independence in 1965, having been established in 1954.
