Seoul, June 29 (NationPress) Koo Yun-cheol, who has been nominated as the inaugural finance minister under President Lee Jae Myung of South Korea, is a seasoned bureaucrat esteemed for his expertise in fiscal policy and interagency coordination.
The 60-year-old has held significant positions at the Ministry of Economy and Finance over the years, including roles as director-general of fiscal performance, chief budget officer, and second vice minister.
Koo was instrumental in implementing the government's expansionary fiscal policies between 2017 and 2020 during his tenure as budget chief and subsequently as the second vice finance minister.
In 2020, he spearheaded the national budget formulation, surpassing 500 trillion won (equivalent to US$367 billion) for the first time, and managed the drafting of both the first and second supplementary budgets in reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic.
He has consistently been viewed as a strong candidate to lead the Lee administration's initiative for active fiscal engagement and structural economic transformation.
