South Korea: Prosecutors Charge Military Intelligence Chief in Martial Law Inquiry

Seoul, Jan 6 (NationPress) South Korean prosecutors have formally charged the top military intelligence commander regarding his alleged participation in President Yoon Suk Yeol's failed attempt at imposing martial law last month.

The special investigative team from the prosecution indicted Defence Intelligence Commander Major General Moon Sang-ho on accusations of being a key figure in an insurrection and abusing his authority.

It is alleged that Moon dispatched troops to the National Election Commission's office in Gwacheon, located south of Seoul, during the brief martial law enforcement on December 3.

Additionally, he is accused of having discussions about martial law strategies with Noh Sang-won, a former defence intelligence chief, along with two subordinates, at a burger restaurant in Gyeonggi Province two days prior to the martial law's implementation, as reported by Yonhap news agency.

On December 31, 2024, prosecutors also charged the leaders of the Defence Counterintelligence Command and the Capital Defence Command for their purported roles in President Yoon Suk Yeol's failed martial law attempt earlier that month.

The special investigation office indicted Lieutenant General Yeo In-hyung from the Defence Counterintelligence Command and Lieutenant General Lee Jin-woo from the Capital Defence Command, with physical detention, on allegations of being significant players in an insurrection and misusing their powers.

This represents the second indictment in this case, following the charges against former Defence Minister Kim Yong-hyun the week before.

Yeo is suspected of having sent troops to the National Assembly and the National Election Commission under orders from the then Defence Minister Kim after martial law was enacted on December 3.

He also faces charges for ordering the arrest of 14 individuals, including leaders from both the ruling and main opposition parties.

Lee is accused of instructing the deployment of troops to the National Assembly on the night martial law was enforced and directing them to enter the assembly building to forcibly remove lawmakers.

Prosecutors believe that the actions of these commanders may have constituted inciting a riot with the intention of undermining the constitutional order.
