Seoul, Aug 4 (NationPress) In South Korea, a significant number of residents were compelled to evacuate following relentless rains that battered the southern regions overnight, resulting in one fatality and eight injuries, as reported by authorities on Monday.
Approximately 2,559 individuals sought safety in the southern county of Sancheong due to the torrential rain, which the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) labeled as a once-in-a-century phenomenon.
The KMA estimated that the southern regions experienced rainfall between 50 to 200 millimeters from Sunday until 7 a.m. Monday, with some coastal areas in South Jeolla Province receiving up to 250 mm.
Tragically, a man in his sixties was found deceased on Sunday night after being swept away by a flood in the southwestern county of Muan. Additionally, eight people sustained injuries in a highway accident in the nearby Damyang area when a vehicle lost control and crashed into a traffic barrier due to the heavy rain.
In response to the severe weather, the disaster response headquarters elevated its operation level to Level 2 at 11 p.m. on Sunday.
The KMA predicts that heavy rainfall will persist across the country on Monday, particularly affecting South Gyeongsang and surrounding regions.
Forecasts indicate 5 to 10 mm of rain for Seoul, Incheon, and western parts of Gyeonggi Province from Monday to early Tuesday morning, while Busan, Ulsan, and South Gyeongsang can expect 30 to 80 mm of rain, with certain areas surpassing 120 mm, according to Yonhap news agency.
Heat wave alerts have been removed in some regions due to these downpours, with temperatures projected to peak between 29 to 34 degrees Celsius on Monday.
As of August 3, the nation has recorded 19 fatalities from heat-related illnesses this year, attributed to the extreme heat waves.
Over 3,100 individuals have sought emergency treatment for heat-related conditions since mid-May, when health officials initiated a surveillance program for such illnesses, according to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA).
This year's figures show that both the number of patients and deaths have more than doubled compared to the same time last year, as noted by the KDCA.
In July, the number of tropical nights recorded in Seoul reached an unprecedented high of 23.
