South Korea Reassures International Missions That Diplomacy Will Persist Under Acting Leadership

Seoul, Dec 14 (NationPress) The foreign ministry of South Korea dispatched diplomatic communications to all foreign missions in the nation on Saturday, reassuring that diplomatic efforts will persist under the temporary leadership of the Prime Minister after the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol.

The ministry emphasized that it will proceed with diplomatic engagements as scheduled, despite the transition to an acting president system, according to a statement made to reporters shortly after the National Assembly cast its vote to impeach Yoon due to a mishandled martial law order.

Additionally, the ministry directed all South Korean diplomatic missions abroad to uphold a disciplined demeanor during these challenging times and to execute their responsibilities with exceptional commitment, while striving to maintain amicable relations with the host nations, as reported by Yonhap news agency.

Earlier on the same day, South Korea's National Assembly voted to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol over his unsuccessful attempt to impose martial law, effectively suspending him from his responsibilities until the Constitutional Court makes a determination on his reinstatement or removal. Citizens reacted with enthusiasm to his impeachment.

The impeachment motion against Yoon was approved with a vote of 204-85, including three abstentions and eight invalid ballots, after all 300 Assembly members participated in the voting process.

The passing of the motion occurred just 11 days after Yoon unexpectedly declared martial law, prompting national outrage as troops surrounded the National Assembly compound in a bid to prevent lawmakers from overturning the decree.

The martial law order, which was rescinded within six hours after the Assembly rejected it, has led to investigations by the police, the prosecution, and the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials to determine whether Yoon orchestrated an insurrection. Currently, he is prohibited from leaving the country.

Following the National Assembly’s decision to impeach Yoon on Saturday, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo has assumed the role of acting president.
