Seoul, Oct 14 (NationPress) The South Korean administration is set to revive a previously inactive foundation aimed at supporting the Kaesong Industrial Complex as part of its initiative to reopen the halted inter-Korean factory area in the North Korean border town of Kaesong, revealed Unification Minister Chung Dong-young on Tuesday.
During a parliamentary audit session of the unification ministry, the minister shared this plan as the government strives to repair its strained relationship with North Korea, according to Yonhap News Agency.
The Kaesong Industrial Complex, which was once an emblem of inter-Korean collaboration, has been inactive for a decade since Seoul halted its operations in February 2016 due to North Korea’s nuclear and missile provocations.
In March of the previous year, the Kaesong Industrial District Foundation, the organization under the unification ministry that provided services for South Korean businesses in the complex, was dissolved by the former conservative administration of Yoon Suk Yeol.
"By reinstating the Kaesong Industrial District Foundation, the government aims to prepare for the complex's reoperation," Chung stated.
Currently, the unification ministry is undergoing a procedural evaluation for the foundation's revival, as reported by the ministry.
Nonetheless, the prospects for the industrial area’s revival seem bleak, given North Korea’s ongoing negative stance toward any engagement with Seoul.
Chung also reiterated the Lee Jae Myung administration’s "END" initiative aimed at fostering peace with the North – focusing on "exchange," "normalisation," and "denuclearisation" – during his speech at the UN General Assembly last month, promising a steadfast approach in pursuing peace.
"The government will consistently work to alleviate tensions and rebuild trust," Chung told the parliamentary Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee.
The minister confirmed the significance of the "END" initiative, stating that the ministry’s endeavors to resume dialogue with North Korea and foster peace on the Korean Peninsula will adhere to this vision.
This initiative emphasizes fostering exchanges with North Korea, normalizing inter-Korean relations, and promoting denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula, aligning with Lee’s strategy of reducing military tensions and creating peace in the region.
