Synopsis
Key Takeaways
London/Mumbai, Oct 14 (NationPress) The United Kingdom's Carrier Strike Group (CSG), headed by the HMS Prince of Wales aircraft carrier, departed from India on Tuesday following a remarkably successful bilateral Exercise Konkan with the Indian Navy, which included exceptional port visits to Mumbai and Goa.
"It was an honor to train, collaborate, and strengthen maritime ties with our Indian partners—until next time," the Strike Group shared on its official X account before its departure.
The Indian Navy and Royal Navy bilateral Exercise Konkan-25 commenced on October 5, along the western coast of India. Over the last twenty years, this exercise has significantly expanded in scale and complexity, promoting enhanced interoperability and mutual understanding in maritime operations between both navies.
Although the Exercise had been biennial since 2004, this year marked the first-ever instance of a British and Indian Carrier Strike Group conducting a maritime exercise together.
The exercise unfolded in two segments from October 5 to 12. The harbor phase featured professional interactions among naval personnel, cross-deck visits, sports events, and cultural exchanges. Additionally, Joint Working Group meetings and Subject Matter Expert Exchanges were conducted.
The sea phase involved complex maritime operational drills concentrating on anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine exercises, as well as flying operations and various seamanship evolutions. Both nations deployed frontline assets, including aircraft carriers, destroyers, frigates, submarines, and both integral and shore-based air assets.
The participation of the UK Carrier Strike Group (UK CSG 25), led by HMS Prince of Wales, along with assets from Norway and Japan, added prestige to this year's exercise. The Indian contingent was represented by the carrier battle group of the indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, supported by other surface, subsurface, and air combatants.
"This exercise reaffirms our shared commitment to ensuring secure, open, and free seas, exemplifying the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership defined in the India-UK Vision 2035," stated the Indian Navy.
Following the conclusion of Exercise Konkan 2025 with the Indian Navy on October 12, the UK CSG participated in a one-day exercise with the Indian Air Force off the western coast of India before proceeding with its planned deployment.
"Exercise Konkan 2025 will act as a platform to reinforce strategic ties, enhance interoperability, and contribute to regional maritime stability," emphasized the Indian Defence Ministry earlier this month.
