Seoul, Nov 15 (NationPress) Officials from South Korea and the United States expressed optimism regarding the future of their increasingly cooperative relationship, labeling it a 'model' and 'forward-looking' alliance during the celebrations for the Korean National Day and Armed Forces Day in Washington.

This positive outlook on the longstanding partnership was made public just a day after both Seoul and Washington released a joint fact sheet outlining extensive agreements on security, trade, and other critical matters, alleviating doubts about bilateral relations and putting an end to rampant speculation regarding the delay in its publication, according to reports from Yonhap news agency.

The event saw participation from notable figures including South Korean Ambassador to the United States Kang Kyung-wha, US Under Secretary of Defence for Policy Elbridge Colby, Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Michael DeSombre, Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Christopher Mahoney, among others.

Hosted at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium, the venue is historically significant as it was where the North Atlantic Treaty was signed in 1949, establishing the transatlantic alliance during the Cold War.

Ambassador Kang remarked, 'It is indeed fitting that we gather here today to celebrate the ROK-U.S. alliance, often referred to as a model alliance. For over seventy years, it has been the cornerstone of peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula and around the globe.' ROK stands for the Republic of Korea, South Korea's official name.

She further noted, 'With new administrations in both Seoul and Washington, the alliance is entering a new era, evolving into a comprehensive strategic alliance that encompasses security, economics, and advanced technology.'

Kang highlighted the advancements in the two nations' relations, especially the recent conclusion of a trade agreement between them. 'Following intensive negotiations after the August summit, our trade and industry sectors accomplished a long-awaited breakthrough on tariffs—an achievement that fortifies our economic and technical collaboration.'

Discussing the global appeal of Korean culture, including music and cuisine, the ambassador emphasized how cultural ties enhance the connection between the peoples of both nations. 'Culture is a powerful language. It unites us on a personal level and strengthens the fabric of our partnership.'

Colby commended South Korea for its recent pledge to increase its defense budget to 3.5 percent of its gross domestic product, underscoring the Trump administration's preference for 'partnerships' over 'dependencies.' 'I echo Ambassador Kang's sentiments… South Korea is indeed a model ally, and it is particularly appropriate to say this today as President Lee and the Republic of Korea have demonstrated their commitment through action.'

Colby mentioned, 'South Korea is now the first treaty ally of the U.S. outside of NATO to agree to the 3.5 percent standard established by President Trump at the Hague summit.'

DeSombre acknowledged the strengthened alliance resulting from the relationship between President Lee Jae Myung and U.S. President Donald Trump. 'Their interactions have elevated our partnership to unprecedented levels and set a course to amplify positive momentum.'

On the joint fact sheet, he described it as a 'testament to the depth and breadth' of the relationship between the two nations. 'We have an ambitious path ahead, and much work lies before us.'

He expressed enthusiasm for collaborating with Korean allies to address significant challenges, stating, 'I firmly believe there is nothing we cannot achieve with our collective ingenuity, determination, and resilience.'

DeSombre expressed optimism that under the leadership of both presidents, the alliance will become 'closer and stronger than ever.' 'As we reflect on the historical successes of this relationship, we look forward to the next seven decades of partnership with our Korean friends.'

Gen. Mahoney emphasized that the alliance transcends mere military cooperation. 'The ROK-US alliance symbolizes what the two nations can achieve when united by shared values and a common purpose,' he stated. 'May our alliance endure for generations.'

Other notable attendees included Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for East Asia John Noh, Rep. Ryan Zinke (R-MT), and Rep. James Walkinshaw (D-VA).
