South Korean Prime Minister Directs Military to Enhance Security Following Yoon's Impeachment

Seoul, Dec 14 (NationPress) In a decisive move, South Korea's Prime Minister Han Duck-soo issued orders on Saturday for the military to bolster its security stance, marking his first directives to various government branches following the National Assembly's vote to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol.

Han communicated these instructions to acting Defence Minister Kim Seon-ho, immediately after the National Assembly approved an impeachment motion against Yoon concerning his mishandling of martial law enforcement on December 3.

He also directed Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Kim Myung-soo to uphold a 'strong' security posture in alignment with the United States, highlighting the risk of North Korea interpreting the current political climate as a 'vulnerable' opportunity to instigate provocations.

Additionally, Han urged Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul to ensure robust communication with key nations through the US alliance and to clarify that there will be no alterations in South Korea's foreign policy, as reported by Yonhap news agency.

In his directives to Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok, Han emphasized the need for a continuous monitoring system to mitigate possible economic repercussions arising from the political crisis and to implement emergency measures when necessary.

He also instructed acting Interior Minister Ko Ki-dong to preserve public order, referencing the likelihood of a surge in criminal activities due to the prevailing political instability.

"I will exert all my strength and efforts to effectively manage state affairs during this challenging time," Han stated to reporters at the government complex in Seoul.

Han plans to convene a Cabinet meeting and address the public once Yoon is officially suspended from his responsibilities after the impeachment resolution is delivered to his office.

The impeachment motion against Yoon was approved with a vote of 204-85, including three abstentions and eight invalid ballots, after all 300 members of the Assembly participated in the voting process.

Earlier that day, the South Korean National Assembly voted to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol due to his unsuccessful imposition of martial law.
