Key Takeaways
Seoul, Feb 5 (NationPress) South Korea's Defence Minister Ahn Gyu-back is set to embark on a visit to Saudi Arabia this week aimed at participating in a significant defence exhibition and engaging in discussions with his Saudi counterparts, as stated by the ministry on Thursday. This visit marks a strategic effort by South Korea to enhance its arms exports.
During his five-day itinerary commencing on Friday, Ahn will be present at the biennial World Defence Show in Riyadh, featuring around 40 South Korean defence companies exhibiting their arms products, according to the ministry's announcement.
In addition, he is slated to engage in talks with Saudi Defence Minister Khalid bin Salman Al Saud and Minister of the National Guard Abdullah bin Bandar Al Saud, the ministry elaborated.
Ahn is anticipated to explore avenues for strengthening bilateral arms cooperation and promoting South Korean military products, especially as Saudi Arabia aims to develop its own defence sector and modernize its military, per reports from Yonhap news agency.
Accompanying him will be Gen. Son Sug-rag, the Air Force chief of staff, who will also participate in the trade exhibition and engage in discussions with his Saudi and British counterparts during the event.
This visit follows Ahn's trip to the Middle Eastern nation five months prior, where he discussed collaborative efforts in the defence and arms sectors.
South Korea aims to ascend to the status of the world's fourth-largest arms exporter by the year 2030, intending to capture 6 percent of the global market.
