South Korea's Main Opposition Pressures Acting President to Approve Special Counsel Bills or Face Repercussions

Seoul, Dec 22 (NationPress) The Democratic Party (DP), South Korea's primary opposition, has urged acting President Han Duck-soo to promptly enact special counsel bills aimed at President Yoon Suk Yeol and First Lady Kim Keon Hee, declaring that he would be made accountable should he fail to do so.

During a press conference at the National Assembly in western Seoul, DP floor leader Rep. Park Chan-dae made this appeal as Han considers whether to veto the opposition-led legislation that calls for special investigations into Yoon's fleeting declaration of martial law on December 3 and the allegations surrounding First Lady Kim Keon Hee, as reported by Yonhap news agency.

"If acting President Han does not enact the special counsel bills by Tuesday, we will hold him responsible immediately," Park stated, implying that the DP would pursue his impeachment.

Park emphasized that a special counsel to investigate insurrection allegations against Yoon would be the "most rational" course of action, further asserting that there is no justification for delaying investigations into the allegations concerning First Lady Kim, which involve stock manipulation and interference in election nominations.

The National Assembly passed the two bills earlier this month following the controversy surrounding Yoon's brief martial law implementation.

The ruling People Power Party (PPP) criticized the DP's request, claiming the bills aim to disrupt state operations.

"These bills were crafted by the DP with the hidden agenda of stalling state functions and undermining the ruling party," remarked PPP floor leader Kweon Seong-dong.

On Thursday, Han exercised his presidential authority for the first time, vetoing six other contentious bills that had been passed by the National Assembly since he took on interim leadership following the impeachment vote against Yoon on December 14.

Additionally, South Korean police disclosed that they had interrogated acting President Han Duck-soo regarding his involvement in President Yoon Suk Yeol's unsuccessful declaration of martial law earlier this month. Han was among nine individuals questioned about their presence at a Cabinet meeting Yoon conducted shortly before the martial law declaration.

This marks the first occasion in which Han has been publicly acknowledged as a suspect in this investigation. According to a police official, "Of the 12 individuals who attended the Cabinet meeting, we questioned nine, excluding President Yoon Suk Yeol, former Defence Minister Kim Yong-hyun, and Unification Minister Kim Yung-ho."

The official stated, "Han fully cooperated with the investigation."
