Opposition Leader Advocates for Inter-Governmental Consultative Group to Ensure Stability in South Korea

Seoul, Dec 15 (NationPress) The head of South Korea's primary Opposition Democratic Party (DP), on Sunday, suggested the creation of a consultative group involving both the parliament and the government to ensure the stability of state affairs, a day after President Yoon Suk Yeol was impeached due to his declaration of martial law.
DP leader Lee Jae-myung introduced the idea after the National Assembly approved an impeachment motion against Yoon on Saturday, stemming from his brief enforcement of martial law on December 3, which led to the suspension of his presidential duties.
"The normalization of the Republic of Korea is urgent," Lee expressed in a press conference.
"The Democratic Party is committed to collaborating with all political factions for the stabilization of state matters and to restore international confidence."
However, the People Power Party (PPP) dismissed Lee's proposal, emphasizing that it continues to hold the position of ruling party, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
"As the ruling party, we will fulfill our responsibilities through high-level and operational meetings with the government until the conclusion of the Yoon Suk Yeol administration," stated PPP floor leader Kweon Seong-dong to the press.
Lee further mentioned that he would refrain from pursuing impeachment against Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, who took on the role of acting president immediately following Yoon's impeachment. Han has been requested by law enforcement to come in for questioning as part of the investigation regarding the martial law declaration.
"Excessive impeachments can lead to disorder in state affairs. For now, we have decided against taking impeachment actions against Han," he noted.
Lee also urged the Constitutional Court to expedite its actions regarding Yoon's dismissal, asserting that it is the only way to "minimize the chaos within the country." The court has 180 days to determine whether to uphold the parliament's decision, which will either expel Yoon from his position or reinstate him.
On Saturday, the National Assembly voted to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol over his failed attempt to impose martial law, thereby suspending him from his responsibilities until the Constitutional Court rules on his reinstatement or removal, with citizens celebrating his impeachment.
