Main Opposition in South Korea to Initiate Fresh Impeachment Motion Against Yoon Over Martial Law Attempt

Seoul, Dec 11 (NationPress) The Democratic Party (DP), which serves as South Korea's primary opposition, is preparing to file a new impeachment motion against President Yoon Suk Yeol this Wednesday, focusing on his unsuccessful attempt to enforce martial law. This initiative comes shortly after Yoon narrowly escaped impeachment because a majority of lawmakers from his ruling People Power Party chose to boycott the vote.

The DP's decision follows the cancellation of a previous impeachment motion last Saturday, which was abandoned due to insufficient quorum as nearly all members of Yoon's ruling party refrained from participating, as reported by Yonhap news agency.

In light of the motion's cancellation, the DP has declared its intention to pursue Yoon's impeachment on a weekly basis.

The party is set to present the second motion to the National Assembly on Thursday, with plans to put it to a vote during a plenary session scheduled for Saturday. According to legal requirements, an impeachment motion must be voted on within 24 to 72 hours after being reported to the plenary.

This second motion is anticipated to contain accusations that Yoon directly instructed martial law troops to block the National Assembly and apprehend legislators, which could be interpreted as an act of insurrection.

In addition, the National Assembly will convene a plenary session later today to interrogate officials involved in the martial law declaration.

The opposition has called for the attendance of key officials, including Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok, Education Minister Lee Ju-ho, Justice Minister Park Sung-jae, and Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul, among others.

Opposition members aim to question these officials regarding a Cabinet meeting that Yoon held just prior to his martial law declaration last Tuesday night, as well as the circumstances surrounding the Army Special Warfare Command and the Capital Defense Command breaking into the National Assembly.
