South Korea: Opposition Party Criticizes Yoon's Apology, Calls for Resignation or Impeachment

Seoul, Dec 7 (NationPress) The primary opposition group, the Democratic Party (DP), expressed profound disappointment on Saturday concerning President Yoon Suk Yeol's apology related to his recent emergency martial law declaration. They emphasized that his immediate resignation or impeachment is the only viable solution.
Representative Lee Jae-myung stated during a press conference at the National Assembly, as reported by Yonhap news agency, "There is no way to resolve the situation other than the President's immediate resignation or an early departure through impeachment."
Lee's remarks came in response to Yoon's earlier televised public address.
In his address, Yoon expressed he is "sincerely sorry" for the anxiety caused by the martial law declaration and assured the public that he would refrain from making such declarations in the future.
The DP leader criticized Yoon's statements as being entirely disconnected from public expectations, further amplifying feelings of betrayal and anger among citizens.
The National Assembly is on the verge of voting on an impeachment motion against Yoon due to his unexpected declaration and the subsequent lifting of martial law, which has plunged South Korea into a state of political chaos.
Earlier on Saturday, Lee urged National Assembly members to endorse the impeachment motion, calling on those from the ruling party to show fortitude in supporting it.
"Instead of speculating on the outcome, it is crucial that the motion receives approval," Lee conveyed to reporters.
He highlighted that the decision ultimately hinges on the ruling People Power Party (PPP) lawmakers' stance.
A two-thirds majority is necessary to pass the motion, requiring support from at least eight PPP lawmakers.
Lee urged legislators to act with courage, stating, "As individual constitutional institutions, lawmakers must contemplate their existence and responsibilities."
"The public recognizes the need for impeachment and is demanding it. PPP lawmakers understand what justice entails, yet they are pressured to contradict justice and the people's will."
