Seoul, Oct 9 (NationPress) In a significant update, 27.2 percent of the government's online services have been successfully restored just two weeks after a devastating fire at a prominent state data centre, authorities announced on Thursday.
As of 6 am, a total of 193 out of 709 online administrative services that were impacted by the fire at the National Information Resources Service (NIRS) in the central city of Daejeon have been back online, according to reports from the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters, as shared by Yonhap News Agency.
The government has updated the number of affected services to 709, an increase from the earlier estimate of 647. This adjustment follows the restoration of its internal management system for online services, referred to as nTOPS.
Among the services reinstated during the lengthy Chuseok holiday this week is On-Nara Document 2.0, an electronic document management system that allows public officials to efficiently manage tasks in real-time, including drafting, approval, transmission, and archiving of essential public documents.
“The government aims to tackle the challenges faced by those on duty and to create a resilient recovery system through additional manpower and other strategies,” stated Interior Minister Yun Ho-jung at a meeting at the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters.
The fire was ignited by an explosion of a lithium-ion battery in a server room at the NIRS on September 26 and was completely extinguished the following day, according to officials.
On October 3, the South Korean government committed to accelerating the restoration of online services disrupted by the recent fire at the state data management agency during the extended Chuseok holiday.
Minister Yun emphasized the government's determination to restore services rapidly, treating the seven-day holiday as a crucial opportunity for recovery. He assured that measures would be taken to prevent any gaps in administrative services and safety management throughout the holiday period.
The seven-day break, which includes Chuseok, National Foundation Day, and Hangeul Day, commenced on October 3 and will continue until October 9.
Yun also mentioned that discussions are ongoing with the presidential office and financial authorities to secure reserve funds for the restoration of the NIRS and the relocation of damaged systems to an NIRS branch in the southeastern city of Daegu.
“Normalizing the computer network issues is anticipated to be a time-consuming process,” he remarked. “We intend to identify key systems directly linked to daily life and develop dedicated management systems for them.”
