Seoul, May 31 (NationPress) A suspected arsonist in his 60s has reportedly informed authorities that he ignited a fire within a subway train in Seoul on Saturday, fueled by his frustration over the results of a divorce trial.
The suspect is accused of igniting clothing items while traveling on Line Number 5 between Yeouinaru and Mapo stations at 8:43 a.m., having boarded the train with a torch lighter and a fuel canister, as indicated by police and witnesses.
During police investigations, he is believed to have expressed his discontent regarding the divorce lawsuit's outcome. It has been reported that he did not intend to harm himself.
When authorities found him, he had significant soot on his hands and was carried out on a stretcher from the Yeouinaru Station platform. He was taken into custody at 9:45 a.m. after he confessed to the alleged act of arson during questioning.
According to Yonhap news agency, police are expected to seek a formal arrest warrant against him on Sunday.
The fire led to the evacuation of over 400 passengers through the tunnel, with 21 individuals requiring hospitalization for injuries such as smoke inhalation and a fractured ankle. Fortunately, no severe injuries have been reported thus far.
Passengers along with the train conductor initially managed to control the flames using fire extinguishers, and the fire was completely extinguished by around 10:24 a.m. Authorities dispatched 230 personnel, including firefighters and police, to the scene.
Subway operations between Yeouido and Aeogae stations were temporarily halted before resuming at 10:06 a.m.
Earlier that day, the South Korean police apprehended the suspect.
