Seoul, Aug 17 (NationPress) Tragically, two individuals lost their lives and 13 others sustained injuries following a devastating fire that erupted in an apartment complex in Seoul on Sunday, according to officials.
The inferno ignited on the 14th floor of the 20-story building situated in the Mapo district of western Seoul around 8:10 a.m., compelling 89 residents to evacuate. A woman in her 60s and her son in his 20s were confirmed dead, as reported by Yonhap News Agency.
Among the injured, one person suffered serious wounds while the others experienced minor injuries.
The firefighting department deployed 252 personnel and 79 vehicles to combat the flames, which were brought under control by 10:42 a.m. after receiving reports of thick black smoke originating from the building.
Notably, fire sprinklers were absent on the 14th floor, where the fire began, prompting an investigation into the fire's cause.
Earlier this year on February 14, a separate incident resulted in the deaths of six workers and injuries to 25 others at a hotel construction site in Busan, a southeastern port city in South Korea.
The fire at the Banyan Tree hotel construction site was reported around 10:50 a.m., likely caused by insulating materials near a swimming pool on the ground floor of one of the buildings. Firefighters managed to largely extinguish the flames by around 1:30 p.m..
“Upon our arrival, the interior was engulfed in thick black smoke,” said Park Heung-mo, a rescue official from Busan's firefighting agency during a press briefing. “The victims were discovered at the location where the fire began, indicating they may not have escaped due to the presence of highly flammable materials near the exit,” he added.
Firefighters conducted rescues using helicopters, but sadly, six individuals were later pronounced dead. Fortunately, 14 others were safely evacuated from the roof, and over 100 workers were successfully rescued from the area.
