Surge in Flu and Flu-like Illnesses Observed in Mongolia's Capital Due to Severe Air Pollution

Ulan Bator, Dec 9 (NationPress) The occurrence of flu and flu-like illnesses is escalating in Ulan Bator, the capital city of Mongolia, in the midst of severe air pollution, as indicated by the National Centre for Communicable Diseases (NCCD) on Monday.
Across the nation, 277,000 individuals sought outpatient services in the last week, with 7.7 percent exhibiting symptoms typical of influenza or flu-like conditions, according to a statement from the NCCD.
The NCCD has urged the public to implement stringent infection control measures, which includes wearing masks, to address the heightened occurrence of flu and flu-like illnesses amidst the deteriorating air quality, as reported by the Xinhua news agency.
Influenza is a common viral infection that represents a considerable risk, particularly to vulnerable populations. It primarily impacts the lungs, nasal passages, and throat. Young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with chronic health conditions or weakened immune responses are especially at risk.
Typical symptoms include fever, chills, muscle ache, cough, nasal congestion, runny nose, headaches, and fatigue. The main method for treating influenza involves rest and increased fluid intake, allowing the body to fight off the infection naturally. While paracetamol may help relieve symptoms, the use of NSAIDs is not advised. An annual vaccination can assist in preventing influenza and reducing its potential complications.
