Gaza, July 15 (NationPress) Three Israeli soldiers tragically lost their lives in a tank explosion during a ground offensive in Jabalia, located in the northern Gaza Strip, as reported by the Israeli military.
The armed wing of Hamas, known as the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, claimed responsibility on its Telegram channel, stating that the three personnel were killed after "the resistance targeted their tank amidst ongoing battles in the Gaza Strip."
The soldiers were identified as Staff Sergeant Shoham Menahem, aged 21, Sergeant Shlomo Yakir Shrem, aged 20, and Sergeant Yuliy Faktor, aged 19, all serving in the 52nd Armored Corps Battalion of the 401st Brigade. Additionally, an officer sustained severe injuries during this incident, according to Xinhua news agency.
Details surrounding the cause of the explosion remain unclear. Army Radio has reported that initial investigations suggest it may have been an operational mishap, possibly involving one of the tank's shells detonating internally, although the chance of an anti-tank missile strike from Palestinian militants has not been dismissed.
The military has announced that an investigation into the incident is currently underway.
Since the war commenced in October 2023, a total of 893 Israeli soldiers have been reported dead. Meanwhile, health authorities in Gaza have indicated that at least 58,386 Palestinians have perished due to Israeli assaults.
On Monday, Hamas asserted that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is unwilling to engage in any ceasefire negotiations regarding Gaza.
"Netanyahu consistently disrupts negotiation attempts and has no intention of reaching an agreement," the group stated.
Hamas further warned that the ongoing conflict in Gaza endangers the lives of both Israeli hostages and soldiers, claiming that Netanyahu's vision of an "absolute victory" is merely a facade to mask significant military and political failures.
As peace talks continue in Doha, Hamas and Israel have recently exchanged accusations, each blaming the other for hindering a conclusive agreement. Disagreement regarding the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza has surfaced as a major point of contention.
Both Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) stated on Sunday that the ongoing indirect discussions with Israel should culminate in the cessation of hostilities, a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip, the reopening of crossings, and the initiation of reconstruction efforts.
