Washington, March 6 (NationPress) US President Donald Trump communicated to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that the actions he has taken to prevent the increase in tariffs on Canadian products were "insufficient".
A significant duty increase of 25 percent on products entering the US from Canada and Mexico was implemented on March 4 as planned, along with a 20 percent increase on imports from China.
The tariffs on Canada and Mexico were established by President Trump as a response to the influx of illegal migrants and fentanyl, an opioid, entering America via their borders.
China has been singled out for its inability to curb the flow of fentanyl, which originates from there.
Trump has warned of the possibility of introducing reciprocal tariffs targeting countries that impose higher duties on American goods, with India being one of the nations he often references.
"Justin Trudeau, of Canada, reached out to me to discuss what could be done about tariffs," Trump mentioned on Truth Social, his social media outlet.
"I informed him that numerous individuals have died due to fentanyl that crossed through the borders of Canada and Mexico, and nothing has persuaded me that it has ceased. He claimed that the situation has improved, but I responded, ‘That’s not good enough.’"
Trump proceeded to mock the Canadian leader while accusing him of leveraging the tariffs to maintain his political standing.
"He was unable to inform me of the date of the Canadian election, which piqued my interest, as it raised questions about what is happening. I then realized he is attempting to use this matter to retain his power. Best of luck, Justin!"
Trudeau stepped down as Prime Minister in January after losing backing within the ruling Liberal Party, which is set to elect his successor on March 9; the general elections are slated for October.
"For those interested, I also informed Governor Justin Trudeau of Canada that he is primarily responsible for the challenges we face with them due to his weak border policies, which allowed massive amounts of fentanyl and illegal immigrants to flood into the United States," Trump commented in another post, derisively referring to Trudeau as "Governor" and suggesting Canada as the 51st state of the US.
Trudeau has labeled Trump’s tariffs on Canadian goods as “foolish” and has mandated retaliatory increases of 25 percent on $30 billion worth of unspecified American products, which could extend to $125 billion in goods within 21 days.
