Trump Proposes Canada as the '51st State' Following Trudeau's Resignation Announcement

Washington, Jan 7 (NationPress) US President-elect Donald Trump has reignited his suggestion to integrate Canada as the '51st state of the United States' shortly after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation.

In a significant development, Trudeau revealed the conclusion of his 11-year leadership journey and nine years as Prime Minister on Monday.

At 53 years old, Trudeau chose to resign amid growing pressure from his ruling Liberal Party due to his declining popularity. Nevertheless, he confirmed his intention to stay in office until a new leader is chosen before the upcoming general elections.

During this political turmoil in Canada, Trump, aged 78, who has maintained a tumultuous relationship with Trudeau since his initial presidency (2017-2021), reiterated his offer just hours after the resignation announcement.

On Truth Social, Trump stated, 'Numerous individuals in Canada are eager to become the 51st State. The United States can no longer endure the significant Trade Deficits and Subsidies Canada requires to survive. Justin Trudeau was aware of this and decided to resign.'

'If Canada were to unite with the US, there would be no tariffs, taxes would significantly decrease, and they would be entirely secure from the threats posed by Russian and Chinese vessels that constantly encircle them. Together, we could form a truly great Nation!' Trump further elaborated.

Trump has been outspoken about this notion since his meeting with Trudeau in November 2024 at Mar-a-Lago following his electoral win.

During their meeting, Trump reportedly ridiculed Trudeau as the 'Governor of the Great State of Canada' and has reiterated this theme in several social media posts since.

The Canadian government has not yet provided an official response to Trump's comments. However, the statements made by the US President-elect have ignited conversations regarding the strained US-Canada relations.

Moreover, Trump accused Trudeau's administration of failing to address illegal immigration and the influx of illicit drugs into the United States. He warned of potentially imposing a 25 percent tariff on Canadian imports if these issues persist.

A report from the Canadian Customs and Border Protection Service indicated that 358 individuals on terror watch lists were apprehended trying to cross into the US from Canada during the 2024 fiscal year. Trump referenced this to support his claims of Trudeau's 'lax policies' on national security.

Trudeau's resignation marks the end of a challenging period for him, characterized by an initial phase of strong public approval and a global reputation as a progressive leader.

However, increasing living expenses, rising crime concerns, and dissatisfaction with the quality of life gradually diminished his popularity.

Trudeau's departure leaves the Liberal Party in search of new leadership as the nation braces for elections amidst economic and political uncertainty.
