Washington, March 17 (NationPress) The Trump administration has initiated a review of voter registration lists across multiple states, according to a senior official who cautioned that some areas are "resisting" adherence to federal election regulations.

Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon stated on Monday (local time) that the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) is leveraging its existing legal powers to scrutinize state voter registration systems, ensuring compliance with federal standards.

"We have legal tools that we are applying here at the DOJ, some of which are being utilized for the first time in connection with our attorney general's authority under the 1960 Civil Rights Act to access and review these voter rolls," she mentioned in an interview with Real America’s News.

Dhillon explained that the initiative involves aligning state voter rolls with federal databases and sharing the results with state officials. "We’re facilitating the cleanup of the voter rolls by comparing them with federal databases and returning the findings to the states to assist them in their responsibilities," she elaborated.

She acknowledged the inconsistent cooperation from states, noting, "Some states are complying voluntarily, while others are resisting their responsibilities, and I believe there are clear reasons for this resistance."

The DOJ is also discussing practices with various states that may not align with federal law. Dhillon characterized these as ongoing "pre-litigation discussions" aimed at addressing compliance issues before any legal measures are taken.

She highlighted particular concerns with voter verification systems, stating, "Certain states exhibit problematic record-keeping loopholes, such as Minnesota’s vouching standard, which permits one voter to vouch for up to eight others regarding their residency, contradicting federal law."

Federal officials are also communicating with states like North Carolina and Arizona about "irregularities in their voter registration processes that have led to individuals being added to the voter rolls without any verification of their citizenship," Dhillon remarked.

"This constitutes a violation of federal law concerning federal elections," she added.

Dhillon described this initiative as primarily administrative but essential. "It involves a considerable amount of record-keeping and administrative tasks that previous administrations have often neglected," she stated.

She further criticized past enforcement strategies, asserting that prior administrations, particularly those led by Democrats, have taken legal action against states attempting to voluntarily update their voter rolls.

On the subject of election integrity, she emphasized the importance of lawful participation. "Every citizen deserves assurance that their vote will only count once, alongside votes from other American citizens, and solely in their respective state," she asserted.

"Unfortunately, this has not been the standard that has been practiced in our country," she concluded.
