Washington, Dec 29 (NationPress) The US media seems skeptical about achieving a successful peace agreement for Ukraine after the discussions between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Many outlets suggested that while progress is plausible, a deal remains elusive.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the meetings at Mar-a-Lago generated new optimism but did not lead to any significant breakthroughs. It highlighted that Russia continues to seek territorial gains and has dismissed ceasefire proposals. The article noted that Trump expressed a positive outlook but acknowledged that key challenges persist.

According to the Journal, Trump stated, “I believe both presidents aim to reach an agreement.” He also cautioned, “This isn’t a simple one-day negotiation” and referred to the discussions as “very complicated matters.” The report indicated that specifics of what was resolved remain undisclosed.

The New York Times echoed this sentiment, reporting Trump’s remarks that a deal was “potentially very close,” while also cautioning that it might not materialize. The paper noted that a revised 20-point proposal from the U.S. and Ukraine is still incomplete. Additionally, it mentioned that Russia has rejected several suggestions from Kyiv and Washington.

Zelensky characterized the meeting as “a fantastic meeting” with “a fruitful discussion on various subjects.” However, Trump appeared more guarded, mentioning that Europe might take the initiative regarding security guarantees. Concerning territorial issues and the Zaporizhzhia nuclear facility, the article indicated little indication of progress.

The Washington Post also maintained a cautious perspective, stating that Trump and Zelensky expressed hopefulness post-discussions, while emphasizing the existence of significant obstacles. The Post reported that the United States is set to assist in facilitating Russia-Ukraine discussions in January, quoting Trump as describing the process as “very complicated matters.”

Furthermore, the Post noted that while both leaders have moved closer on a proposal, it remains uncertain whether Russia would accept it, with the gaps still being substantial.

Fox News presented a more optimistic view, stating that the talks could pave the way for the first direct communication between Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin in over five years. Citing an insider, it claimed such a call would represent a “diplomatic success” for Trump.

Fox News quoted Trump describing his recent conversation with Putin as “good and very productive.” He expressed, “I genuinely believe we have the foundations for an agreement.” He also warned that if negotiations fail, the conflict could prolong and result in numerous casualties.

US media sources highlighted the increased diplomatic activities surrounding the Trump-Zelensky meeting. Trump communicated with Putin prior to meeting with Zelensky, and both leaders participated in a call with European officials. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen welcomed the progress, underlining the necessity for “ironclad security assurances” for Ukraine.
