What Warning Did Trump Issue to Hamas Regarding Israeli Hostages?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Washington, Oct 26 (NationPress) US President Donald Trump has sent a strong message to Hamas, insisting that the group must promptly return the bodies of the deceased hostages. He indicated that Arab nations engaged in peace negotiations would take decisive measures if Hamas does not comply.
"Hamas must start returning the bodies of the deceased hostages, including two Americans, immediately, or the other nations involved in this GREAT PEACE will take action. Some bodies are difficult to reach, but others can be returned now, yet for some unknown reason, they are not," Trump stated late Saturday on Truth Social.
"We will see their actions over the next 48 hours. I am monitoring this situation very closely," the President added.
While all living hostages have been released from Gaza, the remains of 13 deceased hostages have yet to be returned by Hamas.
"Some bodies are challenging to access, but others are available for return now, yet they are not doing so for some reason," Trump reiterated in a post on Truth Social.
"It might be linked to their disarming, but when I mentioned, ‘Both sides would be treated fairly,’ that only holds if they meet their responsibilities."
Just hours before Trump's announcement, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee met with the families of Itay Chen and Omer Neutra, two American citizens who lost their lives in the October 7, 2023, attacks.
This statement from the President followed a brief meeting aboard Air Force One in Doha with Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
Qatar has played a pivotal role in mediating peace and ceasefire arrangements concerning Gaza.
After discussions with Emir Tamim and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, Trump remarked, "The Emir is one of the great rulers of the world... and the Prime Minister has been my friend."
Trump later informed reporters that they discussed the Gaza peace deal during the stopover before heading on his trip to Asia.
Hamas has returned 15 of the 28 bodies of deceased hostages outlined in the US-proposed ceasefire agreement.
The militant group previously claimed it had surrendered all remaining hostages it could access and that "significant efforts and special equipment" are necessary to recover more.
According to two Israeli security officials speaking to CNN on Saturday, Israel is permitting an Egyptian team with tools and equipment to enter Gaza and assist in the search for the bodies of the deceased hostages.
