Washington, Sep 6 (NationPress) US President Donald Trump has announced that his administration is engaged in extensive negotiations with Hamas aimed at securing the release of the remaining Israeli hostages currently held in Gaza. He cautioned that a failure to reach an agreement could result in a difficult situation.
In response to a reporter's inquiry during a session in the Oval Office regarding the ongoing mediated negotiations between Israel and Hamas, Trump expressed, "It's going to be nasty -- that's my opinion, Israel's choice, but that's my opinion," emphasizing the urgency of the matter.
"They gotta let them out," he added, highlighting the emotional toll on the families of the hostages.
Trump referred to the parents of the deceased hostages, whom he described as "young beautiful dead people", stating they seek their loved ones' return even more than if they were alive. He further mentioned that many deceased individuals are part of the negotiations.
When pressed about Hamas's demands, Trump indicated that the group is requesting certain terms that are reasonable, but reminded reporters of the significance of October 7.
"You know, people forget October 7 -- it's not an easy thing to forget," he remarked, urging that this context should be heavily considered.
Trump also disclosed that he had conversations with the families of the hostages still in captivity, stating, "They just want them back very badly, and everything that goes with it -- so it's very sad."
He estimated that of the at least 20 hostages believed to be alive, "there could be some that recently died, is what I'm hearing. I hope that's wrong."
Reiterating his stance from a recent Truth Social post, Trump urged Hamas to release the remaining living hostages immediately, indicating that the US might tolerate the group's continued existence if they comply.
"I was the one who, myself and my people, Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner was great on this — but they got a lot of people out," Trump remarked, suggesting that his son-in-law, who served as a senior White House adviser, played a significant role in past negotiations.
"I always said when you get down to the final 10 or 20 you're not going to get them out unless you're going to do a lot. And doing a lot means capitulation, that's no good either. It's a very tough situation."
He also commented on the large demonstrations in Israel that support a hostage deal, stating that they "put Israel in a tough position" by complicating the prosecution of a war.
