Ankara/Istanbul, March 13 (NationPress) The Turkish Ministry of Defence announced on Friday that it successfully intercepted a ballistic missile originating from Iran that had entered Turkish airspace.
The ministry confirmed in a statement, "A ballistic missile launched from Iran and breaching Turkish airspace was neutralized by NATO's air and missile defense systems stationed in the Eastern Mediterranean."
"We are taking all necessary measures decisively and without hesitation against any threats aimed at our nation and its airspace," the ministry emphasized.
They further stated that they are closely monitoring regional developments, prioritizing Turkey's national security.
Sirens were reported at Turkey's Incirlik Air Base in the southern province of Adana, as cited by Xinhua, referencing a report from Turkey's semi-official Anadolu Agency.
Circulating videos on social media showed what appeared to be a missile followed by an explosion's sound.
This incident marks the third interception of a ballistic missile fired from Iran towards Turkey in recent days, amid escalating tensions in the region.
In response, Iranian Ambassador in Ankara, Mohammad Hassan Habibollahzadeh, stated during a press conference on Friday that this latest incident raises questions, implying that it could have been orchestrated by "third parties aiming to undermine the friendly relations between our nations."
Earlier this week, the Turkish Ministry of Defence reported that a Patriot air defense system, assigned by NATO to bolster Turkey's airspace security, had been deployed in the eastern province of Malatya and was being prepared for operational deployment.
Moreover, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stressed that the ongoing war instigated by attacks on Iran must be halted before it escalates and engulfs the entire region in conflict. He emphasized that "diplomacy still presents a viable path to de-escalation."
At a recent parliamentary session, Erdogan stated, "This conflict must cease before it ignites widespread turmoil. If given the opportunity, diplomacy can indeed resolve this."
Erdogan reassured that Turkey is actively pursuing diplomatic avenues. "We are diligently working to bring everyone back to the negotiating table and reinstate diplomacy as a vital tool," he noted.
He also mentioned that Ankara is taking precautions against efforts that could incite sectarian strife and destabilizing scenarios in the region.
