The United Nations, on March 12 (NationPress), expressed its approval of a recently established agreement between the Syrian interim government and the Kurdish-led forces following the recent turmoil in the nation's coastal area, as stated by a UN representative.
"We commend the agreement finalized by the leadership of the Caretaker Authorities in Syria and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) that occurred on Monday," said Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, during the daily briefing on Tuesday.
UN special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, articulated his optimism in a statement that this agreement could bolster a more extensive, credible, and inclusive political transition, aligning with the fundamental principles of Security Council resolution 2254, which aims to create a new constitution and facilitate free and fair elections, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
Pedersen further urged significant international players, including the US, Turkey, and regional allies, to lend their support to Syrian partners. "This includes backing a nationwide ceasefire and fostering genuine compromises that will allow peace and stability to flourish in northeastern Syria," he emphasized.
On Monday, the Syrian interim government and the Kurdish-led SDF reached a consensus to integrate all civil and military institutions in the Kurdish-administered area under state institutions, according to the state news agency SANA.
The agreement also encompasses measures to safeguard the rights of all Syrians, formally recognizing the Kurdish community as a vital component of Syria, establishing a nationwide ceasefire, and ensuring the protection of returning displaced individuals, as stated in the report.
