Seoul, Aug 8 (NationPress) An aide to the leader of the Unification Church, identified by the surname Jeong, appeared before a special counsel team on Friday to discuss her involvement in an alleged bribery incident concerning former first lady Kim Keon Hee.
Jeong was summoned as a suspect by special counsel Min Joong-ki's team to answer questions regarding claims that the Unification Church had requested a shaman to deliver a diamond necklace and a Chanel bag to Kim in 2022 in exchange for business favors.
She holds the position of chief of staff to Unification Church leader Han Hak-ja and is also the deputy head of the church's main administrative body, according to reports from Yonhap news agency.
The alleged business favors reportedly encompassed support for the church's involvement in development projects in Cambodia, its acquisition of broadcaster YTN, and South Korea's facilitation of a United Nations office.
On August 6, Kim offered an apology to the public for the concerns she has caused while she appeared for questioning by special counsel regarding her alleged involvement in stock manipulation schemes, election interference, and other allegations.
The spouse of jailed former President Yoon Suk Yeol arrived at special counsel Min Joong-ki's office ten minutes after the scheduled time, marking a historic moment as she became the first spouse of a former or current president to publicly appear as a suspect in a criminal investigation.
"I am genuinely sorry that a nobody like me has caused concern to the people," Kim expressed in front of reporters before using the elevator. "I will emerge after complying with the investigation thoroughly."
Kim is under scrutiny for participating in a stock price manipulation scheme related to Deutsch Motors, a BMW dealer in South Korea, from 2009 to 2012, meddling in candidate nominations for the 2022 parliamentary by-elections and 2024 general elections, and receiving luxurious gifts from the Unification Church via a shaman in return for business favors.
The special counsel team is investigating a total of 16 criminal allegations against the former first lady, which indicates that she may be called in for further questioning.
