Seoul, Dec 1 (NationPress) The initial hearing of Unification Church leader Han Hak-ja commenced on Monday, wherein she is accused of bribing former first lady Kim Keon Hee and Representative Kweon Seong-dong of the People Power Party for favorable treatment.
Han is currently facing charges of breaching the Political Funds Act and the anti-graft law due to her alleged role in providing expensive gifts, including a luxury necklace and Chanel bags, to Kim, who is the spouse of the imprisoned former President Yoon Suk Yeol.
Furthermore, she is also implicated in a scheme with a former church official, Yun Young-ho, to deliver 100 million won (USD 68,000) to Kweon in 2022 as a quid pro quo for favors benefiting the church, as reported by Yonhap News Agency.
During proceedings at the Seoul Central District Court, Han's defense team dismissed the accusations presented by special counsel Min Joong-ki, claiming that they were based solely on the statements from the former church official.
Han appeared in court in a wheelchair, dressed in a black coat. A large crowd of Unification Church supporters lined up outside the courtroom earlier to attend the trial.
"The prosecution has hastily portrayed Han as an accomplice to Yun's actions, which were motivated by his political aspirations," her attorneys argued.
They contended that the luxurious gifts presented to Kim were arranged by Yun, asserting that Han did not provide any direction or receive any briefings regarding them.
The allegations surrounding the gifts have raised questions about whether the former first lady accepted bribes in exchange for assisting the church with business favors following Yoon's election in March 2022.
In a recent admission, Kim conceded to receiving the Chanel bags from a mediator but refuted the claim that they were given in exchange for favors to the church.
Meanwhile, the special counsel emphasized the seriousness of the alleged offenses, highlighting that the church misappropriated donations from followers.
Han was temporarily released from detention last month for eye surgery but returned to custody three days later when a court declined to extend her release.
A court session regarding Han's bail request is scheduled for later in the afternoon.
