US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor on Thursday, 27 August visited Gandhi Smriti in New Delhi, holding discussions with Vice Chairman Vijay Goel on India-US relations, heritage, cultural exchanges, and tourism. The visit underscores the deepening diplomatic engagement between the two countries at a time of expanding bilateral ties.

J&K Visit and Travel Advisory Signal

The Gandhi Smriti visit follows Ambassador Gor's trip to Jammu and Kashmir last week — a visit notable for being the first by a US Ambassador to the Union Territory since the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019. During that visit, Gor signalled that the United States would reconsider its travel advisories for Jammu and Kashmir.

'The US will reconsider its travel advisories on Jammu and Kashmir. This is an important part of India,' Gor said after meeting Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. He described the region as 'an incredibly beautiful place' and noted that follow-up discussions were expected to continue in both Washington and New Delhi.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah called the meeting with the US Ambassador productive. 'It was a very good meeting. We had an opportunity to discuss the relations between our two countries, but with specific focus on what the US can do with J&K,' Abdullah said. He acknowledged 'certain legacy issues' that would need to be resolved over time, while expressing optimism that US-J&K engagement would 'widen and deepen in the years ahead.'

This comes amid a broader warming in India-US ties, with cultural and people-to-people diplomacy gaining ground alongside strategic and economic cooperation.
