New Delhi, Dec 26 (NationPress) Just a day after Beijing accused Washington of misrepresenting its defense policy in a recent Pentagon report, a piece published by China's state-run news outlet emphasized the significance of bilateral relations in the economic and trade sphere and their implications on a global scale.
"International relations have never been smooth sailing. It requires wisdom and responsibility to stabilize the course and steer the overall situation amid turbulent waves," noted People’s Daily Online on Friday.
The article reflected on historical contexts, indicating that for the sake of our shared responsibility and future, China and the US should and can cooperate.
This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War, highlighting how China and the US fought together to defend peace and justice during humanity's darkest moments.
Earlier this year, trade tensions between US and China escalated as President Donald Trump’s administration reinstated and raised tariffs on imports from Beijing, citing various concerns including trade imbalances and national security issues.
In retaliation, China imposed reciprocal tariffs on key US exports such as agricultural products and industrial machinery.
Despite global trade disruptions, diplomatic negotiations, including President Trump’s meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, aimed to ease tensions but did not result in a formal comprehensive trade agreement.
The column emphasized that head-of-state diplomacy has been pivotal in calibrating the direction of bilateral relations.
On Thursday, Beijing criticized the Pentagon report, claiming it distorts China's defense policies and suggested that Washington should not interfere in China's diplomatic relations.
The US Defence Department report indicated that China continues preparing for a potential military confrontation with India along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), despite both nations pursuing diplomatic measures to stabilize relations.
The report advised caution, noting that while India and China agreed in October 2024 to disengage from various standoff points along the LAC, this does not signify a change in China’s long-term military posture.
China has maintained its stance, even as New Delhi raised alarms over an Indian citizen born in Arunachal Pradesh allegedly detained and harassed at Shanghai airport due to her birthplace.
Beijing is also wary of Washington's record arms sales to Taiwan, which China regards as part of its territory, alongside the US National Security Strategy, which suggests aligning actions with allies to prevent domination by a single competitor.
The document makes it clear who the “single competitor nation” is.
Friday's article in People’s Daily is interpreted as a shift in Beijing’s approach as the White House appears to be softening its position towards India.
“Any attempt to simplify China-US relations into a narrative of ‘competition’ or ‘confrontation’ is a misreading of reality that is unhelpful in solving problems,” the article stated.
The piece concluded by asserting that China-US relations not only shape the global strategic landscape but also affect the global economy and the lives of people worldwide.
“When China and the US collaborate, the world feels secure; confrontation leaves it anxious,” the article cautioned, aiming to alleviate tensions.
