A United States State Department internal assessment has highlighted widespread praise on Indian social media for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's diplomatic outreach, defence agreements, and personal rapport with President Donald Trump during his February 2025 Washington visit, according to documents released under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) in July 2025.

What the Embassy Assessment Found

The February 18, 2025 analysis, conducted by the US Embassy and marked 'unclassified', examined public discourse on X (formerly Twitter) in India following Modi's visit. The names of officials involved were redacted in the released version.

'PM Modi was praised in certain circles for his diplomatic outreach, especially when it came to trade negotiations and defense agreements that were seen as positive outcomes,' the assessment noted.

It further observed that Trump's characterisation of Modi as a 'tough negotiator' resonated positively with Indian social media users, reinforcing the perception that Modi was effectively representing India's national interests.

Personal Diplomacy in the Spotlight

Modi's personal engagement during the visit — including a meeting with Elon Musk, interactions with Indian Americans, and a joint open press appearance with President Trump at the White House on 13 February 2025 — was highlighted as a strategically smart move by social media users.

'These moments resonated with users who saw PM Modi as effectively putting India's interests forward on the global stage,' the embassy document said.

Modi's stay at Blair House — the official US presidential guest house located directly across from the White House — was also cited as a symbolic marker of the respect accorded to the Indian leader. Social media users drew comparisons with the Washington visits of former Prime Ministers Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, both of whom had also been hosted at Blair House.

COMPACT Initiative Draws Support

The assessment identified backing for the US-India Catalysing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce and Technology (COMPACT) initiative as another positive theme. The initiative was praised on Indian social media for promoting co-production and, in the embassy's words, 'mutually beneficial advancement of military technology on Indian soil.'

This comes amid a broader strategic deepening of the India-US defence relationship, which has seen multiple co-production and technology transfer agreements in recent years under both the Modi and Trump administrations.
