Moscow, Aug 6 (NationPress) The Kremlin expressed no surprise regarding the historically prolonged absence of a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump, attributing it to the unprecedented decline in Russia-U.S. relations under the administration of former President Joe Biden.
Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov commented on the situation, highlighting that for the first time in modern Russian history, a summit has not occurred even after over six months following the inauguration of the new U.S. President.
In the past, the typical wait for a Russia-U.S. summit would average between one to five months. However, it has now been six months and 16 days since Trump assumed the presidency, yet no personal meeting with Putin has taken place, as reported by the Russian state news agency TASS.
Peskov noted, “It’s unlikely to consider this a unique situation. During the previous U.S. administration, our bilateral relations faced an unprecedented decline.”
He further elaborated that under Biden, Moscow and Washington have experienced an unprecedented accumulation of irritants.
Amid rising tensions over the U.S. sanctions deadline, U.S. Special Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff will be in Moscow on Wednesday to engage with Russian officials.
Witkoff’s visit comes at a critical time as tensions between Russia and the U.S. continue to mount.
Trump has also indicated that Russia may face sanctions by August 9 if an agreement to resolve the Ukraine crisis is not reached.
