Washington, Oct 15 (NationPress) The US military has targeted a vessel engaged in narcotrafficking in international waters just off the coast of Venezuela, resulting in the deaths of six individuals onboard, as reported by US President Donald Trump on Truth Social.
This recent operation has increased the total number of fatalities to 27 in a succession of US military actions aimed at suspected drug trafficking boats near Venezuela since September, according to Xinhua news agency.
Trump stated that US intelligence had confirmed the vessel was traveling along a recognized route linked to illicit narcoterrorist organizations.
Earlier this month, the Trump administration informed Congress through a memo that the United States is engaged in a “non-international armed conflict” with drug cartels classified as terrorist entities, and will treat their members as “unlawful combatants.”
The memo, however, did not disclose the names of the cartels or the criteria that the US government would utilize to determine if an individual is sufficiently connected to a cartel to justify targeting.
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has consistently accused the United States of using cartel threats as a pretext to instigate regime change and to increase its military presence in Latin America.
This month, Venezuela's defense and foreign ministries condemned the illegal incursion of US military aircraft.
The aircraft were “detected on October 2, 2025, approximately 75 kilometers from our coasts,” stated Foreign Minister Yvan Gil on social media.
For Venezuela, this action “constitutes a provocation that threatens national sovereignty,” violating international law and the Convention on International Civil Aviation, he added.
