Washington, May 30 (NationPress) The United States has announced that the temporary halt on student visa interviews will conclude "sooner than later". Applicants are encouraged to proceed with their visa applications while regularly checking for the return of standard services.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a directive on Tuesday for US missions globally to suspend student visa interviews to apply enhanced scrutiny on applicants' social media activity.
A prompt resumption of these interviews, as hinted by US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce, would provide relief to the hundreds of thousands of students planning to study in the US later this year.
India remains the leading source of international students in the US, and Bruce’s remarks are particularly significant there.
“At this moment, there may be some delays, but I encourage everyone to check back regularly for openings,” Bruce stated during a daily briefing. “If you have applied for a visa, please continue to look online to see when appointments become available. I wouldn’t advise this if the wait was going to be weeks or months.”
“While I cannot provide an exact timeline, I assure you that changes will occur, likely sooner than later,” she added.
The Trump administration has intensified its examination of foreign students in US universities following political upheaval on campuses concerning Israel’s actions in Gaza after the terrorist attack by Hamas in October 2023.
The administration has criticized college administrations for not doing enough to safeguard Jewish students and foreign students from involvement in these protests.
