Washington, May 30 (NationPress) The United States has announced that the suspension of student visa interviews is expected to conclude "sooner than later". Applicants are advised to continue their application procedures while regularly monitoring updates regarding the return of standard services.
On Tuesday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio instructed US embassies worldwide to halt student visa interviews to implement enhanced reviews of applicants' social media activity.
A prompt resumption of these interviews, as suggested by US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce, would be a relief for hundreds of thousands of students aiming to study in the US later this year.
India, being the largest source of international students in the US, will closely monitor Bruce's comments.
“There may be some delays right now, but I encourage individuals to frequently check for when those openings become available,” Bruce stated during the daily press briefing. “I wouldn’t suggest this if it were going to take weeks or months. If you've applied for a visa and are not receiving an appointment, utilize the online system to keep checking for available slots.”
“While I can’t specify an exact timeline, I assure you this is something that will occur, possibly sooner than later,” she added.
The administration under former President Trump has intensified scrutiny of international students in US educational institutions following the political unrest that erupted on campuses in response to Israel’s actions in Gaza after the Hamas terrorist attack in October 2023.
The government has criticized college administrations for insufficient measures to safeguard Jewish students and foreign students against participating in these protests.
