Washington, Dec 6 (NationPress) US and Ukrainian negotiators engaged in their second day of discussions in Miami, Florida, focusing on the proposed US peace initiative for the ongoing Ukraine crisis, as reported by Axios, a US online news outlet. The negotiations followed a lengthy, five-hour meeting that concluded early Wednesday with US President Donald Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, along with Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to the Xinhua news agency.
On Thursday evening, Witkoff and Kushner spent two hours with Ukrainian officials, resuming talks on Friday morning. They provided detailed insights about their discussions with Putin and introduced new proposals aimed at reconciling differences between the involved parties, the report indicated.
The discussions held on Thursday were described as “positive,” and it is expected that they will extend into the weekend, as stated by a US official to Axios.
The Ukrainian team in Miami is led by Rustem Umerov, Ukraine's secretary of the National Security and Defence Council, alongside Andrii Hnatov, chief of the general staff of the Ukrainian armed forces.
In November, President Trump mentioned that he had directed Witkoff to meet with Putin in Moscow with the aim of reaching a peace agreement concerning the Ukraine crisis.
Trump expressed, “In an effort to finalize this Peace Plan, I have instructed my Special Envoy Steve Witkoff to engage with President Putin in Moscow, while at the same time, Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll will be conferring with Ukrainian representatives,” in a post on Truth Social.
The original 28-Point Peace Plan, initially created by the United States, has been refined with contributions from both sides, and only a few disagreements remain, according to Trump, who noted that his team has made “tremendous progress” over the past week.
Trump expressed his anticipation of potentially meeting with both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky soon, but only once the peace deal reaches its final or near-final stages.
