Washington, Sep 13 (NationPress) The United States has urged its G7 allies to implement more stringent measures against Russia, calling for tariffs on nations that persist in purchasing Russian oil.
In a collaborative discussion with G7 finance ministers, US Ambassador Jamieson Greer and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, echoed President Donald Trump’s call for allies to intensify efforts to cut off Moscow’s energy revenues, which the US claims are fueling the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
“Only through a collective effort to sever the revenues that support Putin’s military operations at the source can we exert enough economic pressure to halt this senseless violence,” stated Greer and Bessent after the conference.
The officials highlighted that the US has already initiated punitive tariffs against countries continuing to import Russian oil, identifying this policy as a fundamental aspect of Trump’s strategy to compel Moscow to negotiate. They encouraged other G7 nations—Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom—to implement similar measures.
Greer and Bessent also commended commitments from G7 counterparts to enhance existing sanctions and explore the possibility of reallocating frozen Russian assets to bolster Ukraine’s defense.
“Thanks to President Trump’s decisive leadership, the United States has already enacted significant actions against purchasers of Russian oil,” the statement declared. “We are heartened by the commitment from our fellow G7 nations to work towards ending this conflict, and we hope they will join us in taking impactful actions during this crucial time.”
This appeal comes as discussions within the G7 continue regarding the extent to which sanctions can be tightened without causing larger energy crises, especially in developing nations still reliant on Russian supplies.
Trump announced on Friday that he will impose stringent economic measures against Russia, including tariffs.
“We will hit them hard with sanctions targeting banks, oil, and tariffs,” Trump stated in an interview with Fox News.
