Vote Against Impeachment Motion for South Korean President Yoon Likely

Seoul, Dec 7 (NationPress) South Korea's National Assembly is anticipated to reject the impeachment motion against President Yoon Suk-yeol due to insufficient quorum, as indicated by television coverage on Saturday.

Following the decision to oppose the bill aimed at probing scandals related to Yoon's wife, the majority of the 108 members from the ruling People Power Party exited the parliamentary chamber, leaving only three behind. One member of the ruling party stayed in the hall, while two returned after stepping out, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

Among the 300 lawmakers in the National Assembly, 198 supported the bill for a special prosecutor's investigation into the first lady, with 102 opposing it. A minimum of two-thirds of lawmakers is required to approve the bill.

Opposition party members, including those from the primary liberal group, Democratic Party, systematically called out the names of ruling party members, urging them to return and participate in the voting process.

To successfully pass the impeachment motion, more than 200 votes in favor are necessary.

The motion is expected to be annulled at 00:48 a.m. local time on Sunday, as it must be voted on within a window of 24 to 72 hours after being presented to the National Assembly.

The Democratic Party and five other smaller parties initiated the impeachment motion following the president's declaration of martial law on Wednesday.

Yoon announced a state of emergency martial law on Tuesday night but lifted it early Wednesday after the parliament voted against it.
