VP Radhakrishnan's Historic Visit to Colombo: Strengthening Ties
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Colombo, April 19 (NationPress) Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan has landed in Colombo for a two-day official trip to Sri Lanka, aimed at further enhancing the bilateral relations between the two countries.
This visit marks a significant step in the evolving diplomatic ties between the neighboring nations.
Upon his arrival in the capital, he was greeted with a traditional Kandyan dance performance, showcasing the rich culture of Sri Lanka.
This trip is especially noteworthy as it represents the first official bilateral visit by an Indian Vice President to Sri Lanka. The focus will be on promoting the historical and cultural connections between both nations.
During his stay, VP Radhakrishnan is set to meet with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Disanayaka and engage in talks with Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya. He will also interact with leaders from the Indian-origin Tamil community and Tamil representatives from the Northern and Eastern regions of the country.
The Vice President plans to address the Indian diaspora at a community gathering in Colombo, where he will virtually hand over housing units to beneficiaries from Tamil communities, part of the third phase of the Indian Housing Project. This initiative will bring the total number of houses constructed for Tamil communities to 50,000, with an additional 10,000 houses currently under development in the fourth phase.
On Monday, the Vice President will head to Nuwara Eliya to visit project sites and engage with the local Tamil community. The Indian-origin Tamil population constitutes a vital part of Sri Lanka, estimated at around 1.6 million, or roughly 7 percent.
This visit follows a series of significant high-level exchanges between the two nations, including President Disanayaka's trip to India in February and Prime Minister Amarasuriya's visit scheduled for October 2025. It aims to further deepen the ancient civilizational and people-to-people connections that India and Sri Lanka share.
