Aden (Yemen), Aug 14 (NationPress) - Following the tragic incident where more than 90 Ethiopian migrants perished due to a boat capsizing off the southern coast of Abyan province, Yemeni officials have declared a comprehensive crackdown on smuggling networks facilitating the transport of African migrants.
The police in Abyan revealed on Wednesday their intention to implement strict measures against anyone found guilty of aiding in the transportation or smuggling of refugees and illegal immigrants from Africa.
As part of these new regulations, security forces will confiscate vehicles, boats, and other modes of transport involved in smuggling activities. Authorities are also calling on the public to assist law enforcement by reporting suspected smugglers or congregations of undocumented migrants.
The recent maritime disaster off the coast of Abyan has been confirmed to have resulted in 92 fatalities, with additional individuals still unaccounted for, according to reports from Xinhua news agency.
Abdul Qader Bajamil, the head of the health office in Abyan, verified that the death toll stands at 92. 'All these individuals were migrants who tragically drowned while attempting to enter Yemen illegally by sea,' he stated.
He further mentioned that the bodies were retrieved from various coastal regions in Abyan. 'We continue our search for additional victims who may have been swept away or remain submerged,' he noted.
The International Organization for Migration has cautioned that such tragedies are likely to persist as desperate migrants undertake perilous journeys along the Eastern Route, which connects the Horn of Africa to Yemen and subsequently to Gulf nations.
Despite grappling with its own humanitarian crisis resulting from years of conflict, Yemen continues to serve as a critical transit hub for migrants seeking employment opportunities in the Gulf.
