Ex-South Korean President Yoon Faces 10-Year Sentence in Justice Obstruction Case
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Seoul, April 6 (NationPress) A special prosecutor's team has called for a 10-year prison sentence for former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol during the appeal proceedings for his obstruction of justice case, which relates to his 2024 martial law declaration.
During the concluding session at the Seoul High Court, special counsel Cho Eun-suk's team requested a penalty that is twice the five-year sentence initially imposed by a lower court in January.
The lower court found Yoon guilty of obstructing law enforcement from detaining him last year and selectively summoning certain Cabinet members to discuss his martial law strategy, as reported by Yonhap News Agency.
He was also convicted of fabricating and subsequently discarding a false statement after lifting the martial law decree but was acquitted of charges alleging he ordered the dissemination of misleading press releases.
According to a member of the special counsel team, "The crime's severity is significant as he misused his presidential authority to undermine the constitutional framework and concentrate state power." This statement references Yoon's purported directives to the Presidential Security Service to prevent his arrest.
"Since the initial verdict, he has had the chance to express remorse to the public but continues to maintain his innocence, constantly making justifications," the member added.
As the session progresses, the judges will listen to the final arguments from Yoon's legal representatives and his concluding statement.
The court is anticipated to render its decision before the end of June, as sentencing hearings are usually conducted within two months following the conclusion of arguments.
Yoon is currently facing a total of eight trials linked to his brief declaration of martial law in December 2024, allegations of corruption involving his spouse, and the 2023 death of a Marine.
In the primary case, he was sentenced to life imprisonment in February for instigating an insurrection through his martial law declaration.
Yoon has been incarcerated since July while awaiting his trials.
