Seoul, Nov 17 (NationPress) The special counsel examining the circumstances surrounding the 2023 death of a Marine is poised to indict Yoon Suk Yeol, the former President of South Korea, this week. This development arises from allegations regarding his interference in a military investigation linked to the case, as stated by a special prosecutor on Monday.
Yoon has faced inquiries from the special counsel, with suspicions that he instructed the presidential office and the defense ministry to alter the initial conclusions of a military investigation concerning the death of Cpl. Chae Su-geun. This alleged action was purportedly aimed at absolving a Marine commander of accountability, as reported by Yonhap News Agency.
According to assistant special counsel Choung Min-young, the team led by Lee Myeong-hyeon does not intend to question Yoon further and is set to wrap up its investigation this week.
The Marine tragically passed away in July 2023 while searching for victims during heavy rains, lacking a life vest or any safety gear.
The special counsel is planning to file charges by Thursday or Friday. Additionally, formal accusations will also be directed towards former military and other officials involved in the case, including ex-Defense Minister Lee Jong-sup.
Notably, Lee was appointed by Yoon as the ambassador to Australia in March 2024, stirring suspicion regarding Yoon’s role in enabling him to evade responsibility for the Marine's death.
Yoon has categorically denied all allegations against him. Furthermore, the special counsel intends to interrogate former National Intelligence Service chief Cho Tae-yong to validate testimonies concerning the Marine’s case. Cho is currently under arrest for allegedly assisting Yoon in imposing martial law briefly on December 3.
The conclusion of the special counsel’s investigations is anticipated to be announced next week, no later than Friday, which marks the expiration of their mandate.
