Why Has South Korea's Ex-President Yoon Been Summoned for Questioning?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Seoul, Nov 4 (NationPress) A special counsel team announced on Tuesday that it has summoned former President Yoon Suk Yeol to provide testimony this weekend regarding his purported interference in a military investigation into the 2023 demise of a young Marine.
The special counsel, led by Lee Myeong-hyeon, issued the summons to Yoon on Monday, mandating his presence for questioning at 10 am on Saturday, as stated by assistant special counsel Choung Min-young during a press conference.
Yoon is currently in custody due to his unsuccessful attempt to impose martial law last December and faces separate accusations of abuse of power and assisting a fugitive in relation to the Marine's case, according to the Yonhap News Agency.
Investigators believe he instructed the presidential office and the defense ministry to alter the initial conclusions of a military investigation concerning the death of Cpl. Chae Su-geun to absolve a then Marine commander of accountability.
Additionally, Yoon is alleged to have aided former Defense Minister Lee Jong-sup in evading responsibility by appointing him as ambassador to Australia in March 2024.
The special counsel team had previously requested Yoon's appearance on October 23, but he did not comply, citing his lawyers' trial schedules.
Choung remarked on the situation, stating, "I understand that his lawyers are not in a position to suggest that he will not appear at all. We anticipate his presence on the eighth."
The deceased Marine passed away in July 2023 after being swept away in a swollen stream during a search operation for victims of severe flooding, lacking proper safety gear, such as a life vest.
On Monday, Yoon Suk Yeol made his second appearance at his insurrection trial since last week after a four-month absence from the proceedings.
The ousted president is facing charges of leading an insurrection and abusing his power through his unsuccessful martial law imposition last December.
Yoon's absence from the trial stemmed from health issues following his second arrest in July, but he resumed attending the trial last Thursday.
