Nicole Kidman is Becoming a Death Doula: Here's Why
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Los Angeles, April 14 (NationPress) Renowned actress Nicole Kidman has announced her journey to become a death doula, motivated by her personal experiences prior to the passing of her mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, who died in September 2024 at the age of 84.
A death doula is a specialized non-medical expert who offers comprehensive emotional, spiritual, and practical support to individuals and their families as they navigate the challenges of terminal illness, death, and the grieving process.
As reported by the San Francisco Chronicle, Nicole expressed during a talk at the Silk Speaker Series held at the University of San Francisco's War Memorial Gym: "In my mother's final moments, she felt isolated, and our family could only provide so much support."
"With my sister and I managing our numerous children along with our careers, it became challenging to provide the care she needed, especially since my father was no longer with us. That's when I thought, 'I wish there were individuals available to offer impartial support and comfort.' This is part of my personal growth, and it’s one of the areas I intend to explore further," she added.
Nicole is not alone in her aspirations; other celebrities have also expressed interest in becoming death doulas. In 2021, Riley Keough revealed she had undergone training, finding that assisting others helped her cope with her grief following her brother Benjamin Keough's tragic death in July 2020.
The star of Daisy Jones and the Six, whose mother Lisa Marie Presley passed away in January 2023, remarked: "Serving others has truly aided my healing process. If I can support others, perhaps I can also find a way to support myself."
Additionally, director Chloe Zhao has disclosed that she has been training to become a death doula to confront her own anxieties regarding mortality.
