Ranchi, June 19 (NationPress) At least 10 individuals have lost their lives and 25 others have been injured due to relentless heavy rainfall that has caused severe disruptions across Jharkhand in the past 48 hours, officials reported on Thursday.
Numerous bridges have been washed away, houses have collapsed, and low-lying regions have been inundated, necessitating the deployment of NDRF teams for rescue efforts.
Major urban areas such as Ranchi, Hazaribagh, Ramgarh, Jamshedpur, Chatra, and Simdega have experienced significant waterlogging, while rural sectors have suffered extensive infrastructure damage.
There have been over 20 recorded incidents of house and well collapses, lightning strikes, and road accidents across the state.
NDRF teams have been dispatched to multiple sites to assist individuals trapped by flash floods.
On Wednesday, the state government issued a red alert for Ranchi, Lohardaga, Simdega, Khunti, and Gumla, while an orange alert was raised for Ramgarh, Koderma, Chatra, Palamu, and Garhwa.
Rivers in these districts are swollen, leading to flood-like conditions in many regions.
Authorities have advised residents to remain indoors until Friday unless absolutely necessary. Schools have been closed in several districts, including the capital, Ranchi.
In a tragic event in Khunti district’s Somar Bazar area, two children — Amit Hunni Purti and Ashish Topno — died after becoming trapped in a semi-constructed well when the surrounding soil collapsed.
Despite a 22-hour rescue operation by the NDRF and local authorities, both children were pronounced dead after being retrieved on Thursday.
Another fatality was reported in Dodma village under the Torpa police station area of Khunti, where 19-year-old Rajkumar Manjhi was buried under a collapsed kutcha wall while attempting to repair his rain-damaged home.
In West Singhbhum’s Chakradharpur, a woman named Gurubari Dongo lost her life, and three children sustained injuries when a mud house fell apart.
A six-year-old girl also died in a similar event in Tamar, Ranchi district.
Six laborers were stranded overnight on an under-construction bridge over the Karkari River between Sonpur and Doreya in Arki (Khunti) as water levels rose swiftly. An NDRF rescue operation was in progress on Thursday.
