Mumbai, July 9 (NationPress) Maharashtra's Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who also oversees the Energy Department, announced on Wednesday during a state council meeting that consumers utilizing smart postpaid meters will benefit from a 10 percent discount on electricity used during ‘Solar Hours’, as outlined in the latest tariff order from the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC).
He highlighted that, for the first time in the state's history, electricity rates have been reduced by 26 percent for 70 percent of the population.
In response to a calling attention motion raised by Shiv Sena UBT legislator Milind Narvekar and Congress legislator Satej Patil, he discussed the government's action plan for rolling out the smart meter initiative within the state.
CM Fadnavis declared that postpaid smart meters will replace prepaid smart meters.
“With the installation of these meters, electricity consumption will be optimized, ensuring that there is no financial strain on the consumer for the next decade,” he stated.
He added that the Central Government has allocated funds to states nationwide to replace feeder meters with electronic meters and has urged them to enhance their electricity distribution systems. This initiative was embraced in Maharashtra back in 2020.
Previously, the state’s power distribution entity, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company (Mahavitaran), confirmed that the installation of smart meters would incur no costs for customers. These smart meters promise accurate billing, ensuring that consumers only pay for the electricity they actually use.
The smart meters are designed as postpaid devices, eliminating the need for customers to recharge them. Mahavitaran clarified that the billing process will continue as usual, with customers receiving their bills in the same manner as before. These smart meters will aid in preventing electricity theft, reducing losses, and delivering real-time data on energy usage.
Tested at a national laboratory, the smart meters ensure precise readings, and customers will have the ability to monitor their energy consumption in real-time through the Mohile app. Additionally, these smart meters will empower customers to manage their energy usage more effectively and minimize waste. They are also capable of identifying electricity theft, which will help decrease losses and enhance the overall efficiency of the power grid.
