Mumbai, July 14 (NationPress) Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced on Monday that the state cabinet has approved a new policy aligned with the PM Suryaghar Yojana. This initiative will provide a subsidy for the installation of rooftop solar panels for electricity consumers utilizing between 0-100 units.
In addition, the government is considering the rollout of underground cabling across Maharashtra. Following the endorsement from the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC), a surcharge of 1, 2, or 5 paise may be applied to the tariffs charged to electricity consumers.
During a response to a calling attention motion by NCP member Chetan Tupe in the state Assembly, CM Fadnavis stated that for the first time in 20 years, the electricity tariff for approximately 70 percent of consumers consuming 0-100 units from the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company (Mahavitaran) has been reduced by 26 percent. He assured that there will be no 10 percent increase in the power tariff for these consumers in the future.
The CM noted that underground cabling has already been initiated in some areas and can be expanded to other regions of Maharashtra to improve electricity supply. The proposed surcharge will be collected through the tariff from electricity consumers. Congress MLA Amit Deshmukh had requested an update on the implementation of underground cabling statewide.
In response to Deshmukh's inquiry about the status of smart metering, CM Fadnavis revealed that 40 lakh smart meters have been installed, with only one percent of complaints regarding installation, all of which have been promptly resolved.
He further stated that there have been no reports of inflated electricity bills from the consumers.
According to CM Fadnavis, consumers equipped with smart meters receive a 10 percent rebate on their electricity tariff during solar hours.
He clarified that the costs associated with the installation of smart meters are financed through energy savings, and the installation is conducted via outsourcing.
Additionally, consumers with smart meters can utilize an APP to access real-time information about their electricity consumption and energy savings.
