At least 11 people were killed and five others injured after a massive fire set off a chain of explosions at a firecracker factory in Manouri Bazaar, under Pipri police station limits in Kaushambi district, Uttar Pradesh, on Monday, 31 August, district authorities confirmed. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams were deployed at the site as rescue operations continued.

Scale of the Blast and Rescue Operations

District Magistrate Amit Pal Sharma confirmed 11 deaths and said search operations were still underway, with officials fearing more victims may be trapped under debris from the factory and surrounding structures that collapsed in the blast. The five injured are receiving treatment at Swaroop Rani Nehru (SRN) Hospital in Prayagraj, with authorities arranging immediate medical assistance for anyone recovered during ongoing search efforts.

Local residents were among the first to respond, pulling survivors from the rubble and carrying those with burn injuries on makeshift stretchers to the roadside before ambulances transported them to hospital. A child is reportedly among the critically injured. Residents of nearby houses were also hurt in the explosions.

Government Response and Relief Announced

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and directed officials to accelerate rescue operations and ensure adequate medical care for the injured. He announced an ex gratia payment of ₹2 lakh to the families of each person killed and ₹50,000 to each of the injured, and called for all possible assistance to be extended to affected families.

Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya also expressed grief, describing the loss of multiple members from a single family as heartbreaking. He directed hospital authorities to provide the best available treatment and underscored that saving lives remained the government's top priority.

Legal Action Against Those Responsible

District Magistrate Sharma assured strict accountability, stating that criminal cases would be registered under serious provisions of the law. He added that stringent measures, including property attachment, would be initiated in line with government directives against those found responsible for the tragedy.

Devastation at the Site

Images from Manouri Bazaar showed relatives desperately combing through rubble for missing family members, while others rushed to hospitals seeking information about their loved ones. Administrative and police teams cordoned off the area immediately after the blasts and intensified clearance efforts. Search operations were continuing as of the last official update.

This incident underscores the persistent safety failures at unlicensed or poorly regulated firecracker units across Uttar Pradesh — a recurring pattern ahead of the festive season. Authorities are expected to conduct a broader inspection of such units in the district in the coming days.
